EPS Shape Molding: Expanded polystyrene foam packaging - the familiar white material custom molded to cushion, insulate, and protect all types of products during distribution.

EPS Block Molding: Expanded polystyrene insulation board - used for housing and commercial construction.

Foam Foodservice: Foodservice products (i.e. cups, plates, trays, etc.) that are made of polystyrene resin and foamed to provide a unique insulating quality.

Loosefill Packaging: Small pieces of polystyrene used for packaging. Often referred to as "peanuts". Test peanuts to see if they dissolve in water, If they do then they are biodegradable packing peanuts and can be composted of or disposed of safely in the trash. Most packaging stores (MailBoxes Etc., U-Haul, etc. ) will reuse packing peanuts which is even better than recycling. Just Drop them off! You can also call the Nationwide return and reuse network through the Plastic Loosefill Council. Call 1-800-828-2214 to find the location nearest you.

Non-Foam Polystyrene: Products made of polystyrene resin that have not been foamed, i.e. high impact polystyrene (HIPS) and oriented polystyrene (OPS).

Post Consumer: Any product that has served its initial use.

Post Industrial: Any PS which is scrap or waste from an industrial process and/or consumer material that has not been used. Post Industrial PS should not require any special washing or sorting processes. Cleaned and sorted post consumer material may in many cases be used in post industrial PS processes.

Styrofoam: A Dow Chemical Company brand trademark for a polystyrene foam thermal insulation product. It is incorrect to refer to any other polystyrene foam product as Styrofoam.

Polystyrene Drop-Off and Post Consumer Handlers

Prices in the post-consumer recycled polystyrene(PS) market have been relatively volatile in recent years. As prices fluctuate, handlers may alternately stop and resume accepting post-consumer PS. It is important to check with communities and recycling centers to see if they are continually accepting polystyrene for recycling. Currently, food service foam is the least recyclable form of polystyrene. If you are planning to recycle large quantities of this commodity it is wise to check several different poylystyrene handlers for their current status and terms regarding food service PS foam. When prices are low, some recyclers may charge a fee to the generators of these wastes for recycling.
